Piercing After-care Procedure
1. Keep it Clean
-
Clean the piercing twice daily using a saline solution (1/4 teaspoon sea salt in 1 cup of warm distilled water) or a non-alcoholic, fragrance-free piercing aftercare spray.
-
Avoid using hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, or ointments as they can irritate the piercing and delay healing.
2. Clean Your Hands
-
Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching or cleaning your piercing to avoid introducing bacteria.
3. Avoid Touching the Piercing
-
Do not touch or twist the jewelry, except when cleaning it, as this can introduce bacteria and cause irritation or infection.
-
If you must touch the piercing, make sure your hands are clean.
4. Avoid Submerging the Piercing in Water
-
For the first few weeks, avoid swimming in pools, hot tubs, or natural bodies of water, as these can introduce bacteria.
-
Showering is fine, but try to keep the piercing out of direct water streams, especially during the first few days.
5. No Sleeping on the Piercing
-
Try to avoid sleeping on the side of the piercing, especially in the early healing stages, to prevent irritation or pressure that can cause discomfort or complications.
6. Avoid Tight Clothing or Jewelry
-
Avoid wearing tight clothing or jewelry that may rub against the piercing, causing irritation or friction.
7. Healing Time
-
Healing times vary based on the type of piercing. For example:
-
Ear lobes: 6-8 weeks
-
Helix/Cartilage: 3-6 months
-
Nose/Septum: 2-4 months
-
Navel: 6-12 months
-
Tongue: 4-6 weeks
-
-
Be patient, and follow aftercare instructions even after the piercing appears healed on the surface.
8. Watch for Signs of Infection
-
While some redness, swelling, and tenderness are normal in the first few days, contact a professional if you notice:
-
Severe pain
-
Increased redness or swelling
-
Pus or other discharge (yellow/green, foul-smelling)
-
Fever
-
9. Protect from Irritants
-
Avoid exposing your piercing to harsh chemicals (like hairspray, perfumes, or lotions) in the first few weeks. These can irritate the healing tissue.
10. Follow-up
-
Make sure to follow up with your piercer if you have any concerns or if the piercing isn’t healing properly.
Following these aftercare instructions will help ensure your piercing heals safely and reduces the risk of infection. Always follow the specific guidance given by your piercer, as care may vary depending on the location and type of piercing.
